How to Think About AI in the Workforce

(NewsUSA) – As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes entrenched in many businesses, people are talking about what AI means for the workforce.

Ramsay Brown, CEO of Mission Control, a machine learning governance platform for accelerating quality velocity and trust in artificial intelligence, shared some ideas with the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), a bipartisan nonprofit organization, in a podcast.

Some of his key points are summarized here.

Brown’s company has coined the term “synthetic labor” to describe a way to think about AI in the workforce. In the near future, tools such as ChatGPT will go from being assistants to being more directly involved in business processes, Brown explained.

As AI shifts from being a tool to being a laborer, AI in different companies may take on names, AI-generated faces, and “a variety of competencies that make them more like a labor force and less like a tool like Microsoft Word or Google Sheets,” Brown said.  “That shift of moving from AI as a tool to AI as a laborer capable of performing business tasks on its own is going to represent one of the most fundamental labor transformations in human history,” he added. “Our organization’s goal is to build the ideas to help us navigate that with security and resilience and our values in life,” he said.

Ways in which AI has integrated into today’s workforce go beyond easily automated tasks such as flipping burgers or collecting trash:

– Support services. AI does not mean that a robot doctor will set your wrist in the hospital emergency room. Instead, “it’s that every person that doctor used to rely on, such as administrators, accounts receivable clerks, and data analysists, will increasingly be intelligent software,” Brown said. Not all jobs will disappear, but prepare for extensive unemployment among those whose main job focus is support, such as using Microsoft Office, he cautioned.

– Creative codes. AI may be able to write a poem or symphony. However, there will always be “a place where we break something new out of the soul and the human spirit,” Brown said. “The problem is that most people are listening to top 40 music and top 40 is quite automatable. That’s already mostly software and coding.”

“The evolution of AI into the workforce is not all doom and gloom,” Brown emphasized.

“Think of our greatest challenges, such as aging, or whether we can become a spacefaring civilization, and think of 100 million fresh minds trained in the state of the art to work on a problem nonstop,” he said. “That is the future; we are at the doorstep, and that is why organizations like mine and other people working on AI and artificial general intelligence are so excited about this.”

Unveiled today at the National Association of Pupil Transportation’s (NAPT) Conference and Trade Show in Columbus, Ohio, the Mega BEAST is designed to provide the answer for longer range routes and other desired uses by a school district. The extended range created by the larger battery pack is an ideal solution for many rural school districts with longer routes, school districts with less chance for mid-day opportunity charging, school districts that face extreme weather conditions and schools that also use the all-electric bus for extra-curricular activities.

“Before now, there was not a vehicle on the market that offered these longer-range capabilities. The Mega BEAST sets a new benchmark in the industry by addressing the needs and filling the gap in the current market where longer range all-electric school buses are required,” said GreenPower President Brendan Riley. “All-in-all the Mega BEAST is the same class leading vehicle as the BEAST just with a bigger battery, more range and more uphill climbing power.”

Riley also noted that the larger battery size of the Mega BEAST is desirable for V2G applications where there is a need to use the battery as energy storage and not just for transportation purposes. “V2G is becoming a common-sense tool that helps to create a more reliable grid, promote clean energy and reduce costs. The larger battery of the Mega BEAST has the ability to provide for a more healthy and stable electric grid and community stability in areas where it is deployed and V2G is used,” he said.

The Mega BEAST joins GreenPower’s award-winning line-up of all-electric, purpose-built, zero-emission school buses including the Type D BEAST and the award-winning Type A Nano BEAST. It will be manufactured in the US at GreenPower’s facilities in both California and South Charleston, West Virginia beginning in 2024.

Mountain State receives grants to develop its tech industry

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WBOY) — An investment from the Economic Development Administration will go toward the development of West Virginia’s technology sector and “create future economic opportunities for West Virginians,” according to a Monday release from the office of Senator Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.).

Two Tech Hub Strategic Development Grants were awarded to West Virginia as part of the CHIPS and Science Act’s Tech Hubs Program, the West Virginia Advanced Energy and Industrial Technology Manufacturing Hub and the West Virginia Digital Identity Tech Hub.

Tech Hubs, or Regional Technology and Innovation Hubs, are diverse groups of “public, private, and academic partners focused on manufacturing, commercializing and deploying cutting-edge and critical technologies,” according to a separate release from the office of Senator Manchin.

“West Virginia ingenuity and grit built our great nation, and these Tech Hub Strategic Development Grants will encourage a new chapter of innovation and entrepreneurship in our state,” Senator Manchin said. “The bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act will help make the United States a global leader in the semiconductor industry again and will enable West Virginia to compete in the industry. Although I am disappointed that West Virginia was not designated as a regional Tech Hub this time, I am confident that with these investments West Virginia will continue to grow and develop our technology bonafides to secure such designation in the near future.”
